Fire Hazard Severity Zone

Overview
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has released updated draft Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps for Local Responsibility Areas (LRA) throughout the state, including the City of Montebello. These maps provide an updated assessment of fire hazards based on the latest scientific data and help guide local fire prevention efforts, inform building regulations, and support emergency response planning.

What this means
Over 4,600 acres in the City of Montebello, primarily hillside neighborhoods, are considered to be under some threat from wildfires. The updated map rates fire hazard areas as moderate, high, or very high based on factors like:

- Historical fire patterns
- Vegetation growth
- Local weather conditions
- Terrain and fuel sources

Share input
Community feedback is an essential part of the map adoption process. The City of Montebello must submit resident feedback and Department refinements and adopt the map by ordinance by July 7, 2025. Residents are encouraged to review the updated map and share their input.
