The Great California ShakeOut

Each year, the City of Montebello participates in the Great California ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake preparedness drill that reminds us all to take simple steps to stay safe before, during, and after an earthquake.
Join millions of Californians in practicing “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” — the most effective way to protect yourself when the ground begins to shake.

About the ShakeOut
The Great California ShakeOut is an annual statewide event designed to help residents, schools, and businesses prepare for earthquakes. During the drill, participants practice what to do during an earthquake and review their emergency plans.
Montebello’s Fire Department encourages everyone—residents, schools, and city staff—to participate and strengthen our community’s resilience.
At Work
City departments and local businesses are encouraged to:
-
Review emergency plans and identify evacuation zones.
-
Practice accountability systems to ensure all staff are safe.
-
Discuss who will take the lead if key staff are unavailable.
-
Plan how to check in with loved ones and return to duty quickly after an emergency.
At Home
Preparedness begins at home. After a major earthquake:
-
Check for gas leaks, damaged wiring, and broken pipes.
-
Take photos of any damage for insurance purposes.
-
Check on neighbors, especially seniors and those with disabilities.
-
Have a family communication plan to reconnect if separated.
Make sure your home is equipped with an emergency supply kit that includes food, water, flashlights, and first-aid supplies.
Be In Communication
-
Monitor local radio or television stations for emergency updates.
-
Text your out-of-area contact to let them know you’re safe.
-
Keep phone lines clear for emergency responders.
-
Follow the City of Montebello on social media for local updates and recovery information.
